EU Pact Compatible with Defence Spending Hike Says Meloni

Brussels: The European Union’s Stability and Growth Pact must align with the planned increase in defense spending by member states, Premier Giorgia Meloni emphasized on Monday. This statement came ahead of an EU summit in Brussels scheduled for Thursday and Friday, and a NATO summit in The Hague on Tuesday and Wednesday.

According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni addressed the House, highlighting the necessity of ensuring that the Stability Pact’s rules are compatible with the defense spending increase agreed upon with allies. She specifically pointed out the importance of equal treatment concerning excessive deficit procedures to avoid risks of asymmetric applications.

During the summit in The Hague, discussions will revolve around a proposal by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to enhance the Alliance’s defense capabilities. Meloni stressed the need for commitments that reflect the complex times, ensuring they are clear, transparent, and economically sustainable for current and future governments.
