Rome: The EU’s 800 billion euro ReArm Europe plan is a bombastic announcement compared to reality, Premier Giorgia Meloni said Tuesday.

According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni addressed the Upper House, expressing her skepticism about the substantial defense funding announcement. During her reply to a debate on her briefing for the upcoming European Council meeting, she supported League Senator Claudio Borghi’s concerns, highlighting the inconsistency between the narrative of limited financial resources and the sudden availability of 800 billion euros for defense.

Meloni clarified that the funds are not new EU resources nor reallocated from other budgets. Instead, the proposal suggests a hypothetical scenario where member states might incur a higher deficit. She emphasized the importance of accurately reporting the gap between the announcement and the practical realities of the proposal.
