EU Defence Parallel to NATO Would Be a Mistake – Meloni

Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni expressed her opposition to the idea of forming a European defence alliance that operates alongside NATO. Meloni emphasized her stance during a statement on Tuesday, underscoring her belief that such a move would be an unnecessary duplication.

According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni stated, “I want NATO to have a European column, but I think it would be a mistake to have a European defence parallel to NATO.” She highlighted that NATO’s foundation is rooted in the military capabilities of its member countries, suggesting that a separate European defence structure could potentially undermine this framework.

Meloni further elaborated on the necessity for increased collaboration at the European level, affirming her support for enhanced cooperation without establishing an independent defence alliance.
