Doctor-Mayor Arrested for Abusing Four Patients
Cremona: A doctor who is also the mayor of a town near Cremona in northern Italy was arrested Thursday on suspicion of sexually abusing four patients, police said Friday. Giovanni Sgroi, a gastroenterologist who is also first citizen of Rivolta D’Adda, may have abused other patients too, they said.
According to Ansa News Agency, Sgroi’s dual role as a healthcare professional and a public official has shocked the local community. The allegations have prompted an investigation to determine the extent of his actions and whether there are additional victims beyond the four who have already come forward.
The arrest has raised concerns about the safety and trustworthiness of individuals in positions of authority, both in medical settings and local governance. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
The incident has put a spotlight on the procedures and safeguards in place to protect patients and constituents from potential abuse by those in power.
