Dbeibah’s Nephew and Haftar’s Son Convene in Rome for Libyan Reconciliation Efforts
Rome: The nephew of Libya’s internationally recognized Prime Minister, Ibrahim Dbeibah, met with Saddam Haftar, the son of eastern Libya’s influential leader, General Khalifa Haftar, in Rome on Tuesday. This meeting marks a significant step towards national reconciliation, according to Libyan sources who confirmed a report by la Repubblica daily.
According to Ansa News Agency, the meeting, which occurred late Tuesday morning, is the first of its kind since the encounter between Khalifa Haftar and Ibrahim Dbeibah in Abu Dhabi three years ago. It holds substantial significance for Libya’s future. The two representatives also engaged with US Special Envoy Massad Boulos on Tuesday, who subsequently met with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in Rome on Wednesday.
The meeting between Tajani and Boulos concentrated on the stability of the Mediterranean and the Middle East, considering recent regional developments. Tajani highlighted Libya’s strategic importance for European and international security, expressing a commitment to bolstering cooperation with North African and Sahel countries to address irregular migration and human trafficking.
Tajani also expressed support for the UN Special Representative Tetteh’s roadmap presented to the Security Council. He and Boulos agreed to meet on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September. The discussions further extended to the situation in Gaza, where Tajani emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages.
Reiterating Italy and the United States’ shared objectives following his recent meeting with Palestinian Foreign Minister Aghabekian, Tajani stressed the importance of ending hostilities, enhancing humanitarian aid, and promoting political dialogue for a two-state solution. On the subject of Lebanon, Tajani underscored the significance of the country’s stability and the efforts of UNIFIL, condemning recent attacks by Israeli forces on UN peacekeepers.
These matters are set to be further explored during the Mediterranean Dialogues in Naples from October 15 to 17, 2025, an event to which Special Envoy Boulos has been invited. Tajani and Boulos also confirmed the necessity of ensuring stability in the Horn of Africa and discussed working within the Mattei Plan’s framework to strengthen strategic partnerships with Africa.
