Conclave: Stop Paedophiles, Abused Priest Writes to Cardinals

Vatican City: An Italian priest who was sexually abused by paedophile clerics and faced years of cover-ups has written a letter to the cardinals responsible for choosing Pope Francis’ successor. The priest urged them to ensure that there would be no more sexual predators within the Roman Catholic Church.

According to Ansa News Agency, the letter from Father Paolo Contini, a parish priest who reported the abuse he suffered as a minor, is set to be delivered to the cardinals gathered in the General Congregations. These meetings have been ongoing for the last two days before the cardinals enter the Sistine Chapel for the papal election.

Contini writes of his personal experiences, recalling how his abuse passed through the hands of multiple bishops and a judge, yet no serious action consistent with the Church’s Magisterium was taken. He expresses frustration at the Church’s attempts to cover up the abuse and labels him as a conspirator.

The letter emphasizes that Contini’s efforts are not a complaint against the Church but are made for the Church’s betterment. Despite the trauma, he has forgiven his abusers, stating that his aim is to prevent future children from falling into the hands of predators while offering a chance for redemption to the abusers.

Contini pleads with the cardinals to remember the victims and calls for a united front against pedophilia. He urges for rigor in trials, certainty in punishment, and genuine listening to the victims. He concludes by highlighting the importance of the cardinals’ role in combating pedophilia and promoting honesty and truth.

The letter is signed by Don Marco Contini, reflecting his ongoing commitment to the Church’s mission while seeking justice and prevention of future abuses.
