Commitment to UN Cornerstone of Foreign Policy, Says Mattarella

Rome: Italy’s commitment to the United Nations is a cornerstone of its foreign policy, President Sergio Mattarella said on the 80th United Nations Day Friday. “Italy’s commitment to the United Nations is a cornerstone of our country’s foreign policy, in implementation of Article 11 of the Constitution. Believing in and investing in the United Nations means working to transform the principle of international solidarity and a world order based on respect for rules into concrete actions,” said the Italian head of State.

According to Ansa News Agency, Mattarella emphasized the importance of promoting collaboration and respect between states as an alternative to oppression. He underscored the relevance of these beliefs in the face of global challenges and the alarming spread of armed conflict. Mattarella further added that the future of a peaceful community of States heavily relies on the UN. He dismissed the notion of the UN being a mere diplomatic accessory or debate forum, stressing that the organization’s role is crucial in realizing the ideals envisioned by its founders after the tragedies of the World Wars.

From this perspective, Mattarella assured that the Italian Republic remains steadfast in its determination to contribute to the UN’s evolution. Italy supports initiatives like “UN80” and advocates for Security Council reform to enhance its representativeness, accountability, and effectiveness in addressing contemporary crises and challenges.
