Cinema: Vermiglio Loses to Emilia Perez at Golden Globes

Rome: Maura Delpero’s Olmi-esque bittersweet mountain wartime drama, Vermiglio, lost out to Emilia Perez in the best foreign film category at the Golden Globes on Sunday.

According to Ansa News Agency, Emilia Pérez, a Spanish-language French musical crime comedy film written and directed by Jacques Audiar, is also the favorite to surpass Vermiglio at this year’s Oscars.

Depero’s Vermiglio, an elegiac film set in a remote northern Italian mountain village in 1944, portrays the profound impact of an army deserter’s arrival. His involvement with the family of the local teacher and his love for the teacher’s eldest daughter significantly alters the course of their lives.

Despite its recent loss, Vermiglio was previously acclaimed, having won second prize at last year’s Venice Film Festival.
