Cinema and Literary Critic Goffredo Fofi Passes Away at 88

Rome: The noted cinema and literary critic Goffredo Fofi has died at the age of 88, his family said Friday. Umbria-born Fofi was regarded as an independent-minded public intellectual who carved his own path, eschewing traditional liberal or conservative viewpoints. He contributed to various publishing houses, including Einaudi and Feltrinelli.

According to Ansa News Agency, Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli remarked on Fofi’s significant influence on contemporary Italian debate through his work as a cultural promoter and organizer. Giuli highlighted Fofi’s ability to raise pertinent questions and foster new meanings within the cultural discourse.

The mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfred, also paid tribute, describing Fofi as a “lucid voice in our culture” who consistently challenged the status quo. Manfred acknowledged Fofi’s contributions to Naples and his role in restoring recognition to the iconic figure Tot², emphasizing that Fofi was a “rare guide” who will be greatly missed.
