Centre-Right Coalition Set to Retain Control in Marche, Boosting Premier Meloni

Marche: The centre-right coalition appears poised to maintain control over the Marche region, providing a significant boost to Premier Giorgia Meloni. Exit polls indicate that incumbent Governor Francesco Acquaroli leads his centre-left challenger Matteo Ricci by a margin of 49-53% to 45-49% following the regional elections held on Sunday and Monday.

According to Ansa News Agency, pre-election polls had previously shown Acquaroli with a more substantial lead. Acquaroli, aged 51 and hailing from the Marche capital of Macerata, represents the right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, led by Meloni. His opponent, Ricci, also 51, is the former mayor of Pesaro, a port city in Marche.

Acquaroli’s coalition includes the ruling national parties: FdI, the centre-right post-Berlusconi Forza Italia (FI), the right-wing League party, and the smaller centre-right Noi Moderati (We Moderates) party. On the other hand, Ricci leads a ‘broad field’ coalition, which consists of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), the left-wing populist 5-Star Movement (M5S), the Green-Left Alliance (AVS), and several centrist local groups.

The regional vote is considered a crucial national test as it is part of a series of seven regional elections occurring in Italy currently and in the coming months. This election series aims to gauge the political climate across the nation. In addition to Marche, there was a regional election in Val d’Aosta where local autonomist and progressive parties retained power. Upcoming elections are scheduled in Calabria on October 5-6, Tuscany on October 12-13, and in Veneto, Campania, and Puglia on November 24-25.
