CEI Regrets Sardinia’s Approval of End-of-Life Law

Rome: The Italian Bishops Conference (CEI) on Wednesday voiced regret over Sardinia’s passing of an end-of-life law, marking it as the second Italian region to do so after Tuscany.

According to Ansa News Agency, the Secretary General of the CEI and Archbishop of Cagliari, Archbishop Giuseppe Baturi, expressed “regret” regarding the approval of the Sardinian law on physician-assisted suicide. He emphasized the stance of the Italian bishops with a reminder that “there can be no polarization or race-tripping on life.”

Archbishop Baturi reiterated the hope that “within the current legal and regulatory framework, we will achieve, at the national level, interventions that protect life in the best possible way, promote support and care during illness, and support families in times of suffering.” He further stressed the importance of ensuring care even when there is no cure, advocating for uniform and effective palliative care instead of facilitating death.

The Archbishop affirmed that the Church remains committed to affirming the dignity of every human being, irrespective of their ability or age, by standing by those who suffer. He concluded with a call to not lose the sense of humanity, underscoring the Church’s dedication to doing its part through words and actions of proximity.
