Carnage in Italian Prisons as Inmate Suicides Surge

Rome: There have been eight suicides by Italian prison inmates already this year plus one by a prison officer, warders’ union UILPA said Monday. “It is carnage, even worse than last year and the situation is worsening with prisons 16,000 inmates over capacity and the prison officer force depleted by 18,000 units, with health services deteriorating, logistical shortfalls, staffing crises, and structural and organizational deficiencies,” said UILPA General Secretary Gennarino De Fazio.

According to Ansa News Agency, the year 2025 has started even worse than the tragic 2024, as highlighted by the recent suicide of a prisoner in Cagliari, marking the second such incident in the Sardinian capital’s penitentiary this year. De Fazio emphasized, “We are now sadly running at the rate of one suicide almost every two days,” describing the situation as a “full-blown massacre.”

The alarming rate of suicides underscores a critical need for reform within the Italian prison system. The overcrowding and understaffing, compounded by deteriorating health services, pose severe challenges to the safety and well-being of both inmates and officers. The union’s call for action highlights the urgent necessity for structural and organizational improvements to prevent further tragedies.
