Carabinieri Arrest 97 in Massive ‘Ndrangheta Crackdown
Reggio Calabria: Carabinieri police on Wednesday staged a huge operation to execute warrants to arrest 97 people suspected of being linked to the Calabria-based ‘Ndrangheta mafia, sources said. The operation was concentrated in the area of the city of Reggio Calabria, although suspects were also detained in other cities across different parts of Italy.
According to Ansa News Agency, several of the top ‘Ndrangheta clans were targeted in the operation. The suspects are accused of crimes including mafia association, international drugs trafficking, extortion, and kidnapping.
The ‘Ndrangheta is Italy’s wealthiest mafia organization due to its control over the European cocaine trade. It is considered the most powerful and dangerous mafia group in Italy, having surpassed Sicily’s Cosa Nostra. The organization’s influence extends worldwide.
