Bogus Priest Cited at Pompei

Pompei: A man who posed as a priest and heard confessions in the shrine to the Madonna at Pompei near Naples was stopped by police Thursday and cited for impersonating others and disturbing religious functions. The man, 44, was caught wearing priest’s clothes in a confessional box in the town near ancient Pompeii.

According to Ansa News Agency, the authorities intervened after reports of suspicious activities within the shrine. The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was apprehended during a routine check by local law enforcement. The incident has raised concerns about security measures in place at religious sites.

Officials are investigating how the individual managed to gain access to the confessional area without being detected earlier. The shrine, a significant religious site, attracts numerous visitors and pilgrims, making the breach of security particularly troubling.

Local religious leaders have expressed relief that the situation was addressed promptly but emphasized the need for heightened vigilance to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The police have not disclosed further details about potential motives behind the man’s actions.
