Rome: Greenpeace Italia and British action group Everyone Hates Elon made a bold statement in Venice’s Saint Mark’s Square on Monday, unfurling a massive 400-square-meter banner targeting Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The protest comes as Bezos prepares for his extravagant wedding to partner Lauren Sanchez in the historic city.
According to Ansa News Agency, the banner, which read, “If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax,” aims to draw attention to what the groups describe as “social and climate injustice” associated with such opulent events. Greenpeace Italia emphasized that this demonstration seeks to highlight the economic and social models exemplified by Bezos, which they argue are contributing to global collapse.
Greenpeace further elaborated on their stance, stating that “social injustice increasingly goes hand in hand with climate injustice.” They criticize the lifestyles of billionaires like Bezos, suggesting that their actions are detrimental to the planet. Meanwhile, they assert that ordinary people continue to suffer the consequences of the environmental crisis daily.
