Befana Rides into Piazza Navona

Rome: The Befana, the mythical witch known for bringing sweet treats to well-behaved children and coal to those who have been naughty on Epiphany Day, made a dramatic appearance in Rome’s Piazza Navona on Monday. Her arrival was facilitated by the fire brigade, who set up a broom for her descent.

According to Ansa News Agency, the Befana, beloved for her gifts of chocolates and other delicacies to Italian children, was welcomed by several onlookers, including Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri. The mayor remarked that everyone could use some sweetmeats, while also acknowledging that receiving coal is a reminder that there is always room for improvement.

The event took on a dramatic flair as firefighters ‘rescued’ the Befana from the Borromini terrace on Sant’Agnese in Agone, which is the main church in the Roman square. The square itself is a hub of activity during the festive season, featuring rides and stands for Christmas and New Year celebrations.
