Beatrice Venezi Appointed as La Fenice’s Musical Director Amid Staff Strike

Florence: Beatrice Venezi has been named the new musical director of Venice’s renowned La Fenice opera house, a decision that has sparked a strike among opera staff. Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli expressed confidence in Venezi’s appointment, stating that her leadership will not leave Italians yearning for her predecessors.

According to Ansa News Agency, Venezi, 35, has previously served as a government musical advisor, a role she assumed after Premier Giorgia Meloni came to power three years ago. Venezi has received accolades from Premier Meloni and the right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, including an award. Her appointment is viewed as part of the government’s initiative to shift away from what it perceives as a left-wing cultural dominance in Italy.

Despite her absence of experience in leading a major opera house orchestra, Venezi has gained attention outside her musical career, including appearing in a hair care advertisement. Giuli, speaking at an election rally in Florence, emphasized Venezi’s artistic and conducting capabilities, dismissing concerns regarding her appointment. He highlighted the importance of leadership in the cultural sector and affirmed Venezi’s readiness to meet the challenges posed by her new role at La Fenice.
