Audit Court Defends Messina Bridge Ruling as Legal Evaluation

Messina: The Audit Court announced on Thursday that its decision to block the government’s initiative to construct a bridge over the Strait of Messina was based purely on legal considerations pertaining to the CIPESS economic planning committee’s approval.

According to Ansa News Agency, the court clarified that the ruling did not evaluate the project’s suitability or merits. It emphasized the need for its decision-making process to be respected, especially following criticism from Premier Giorgia Meloni’s administration.

The court underscored the importance of respecting legality as a fundamental condition for the proper use of public funds, a responsibility mandated by the Constitution to the Audit Court. While acknowledging that its judgments and decisions can be subject to criticism, the court insisted that such criticism should occur respectfully, considering the magistrates’ work.
