Antitrust Probes Rome Transport Company ATAC

Rome: The Italian Antitrust Authority announced that it has initiated an investigation into Rome’s public transport company, ATAC, concerning the quality and quantity of services offered between 2021 and 2023.

According to Ansa News Agency, the authority is examining whether ATAC engaged in unfair commercial practices by not adhering to the standards outlined in its service contract with the city of Rome and the charter governing the quality of public transport services. The investigation focuses on allegations that ATAC consistently failed to meet objectives related to the regularity of both surface and underground transport services. Other areas of concern include the security of underground stations, the operation of lifts, stairlifts, escalators, and the lighting within underground stations.

In response, ATAC issued a statement expressing its willingness to cooperate with the antitrust authority during the investigation and reaffirmed its commitment to renewal. However, the company highlighted the challenges posed by ongoing projects for the Catholic Church’s Jubilee 2025 and pointed to a “prolonged investment deficit” attributed to previous city administrations.
