Almost 4.6 Million Italian Pensioners Live on Less Than 1,000 Euros a Month

Rome: Almost 4.6 million pensioners in Italy, accounting for 28.1% of the total, were receiving State pension income of less than 1,000 euros a month in 2024, INPS reported on Thursday. This figure highlights a significant portion of the pensioner population living on limited financial resources.

According to Ansa News Agency, the data revealed a gender disparity in pension income. Approximately 34.5% of women pensioners, translating to almost 2.89 million individuals, had a monthly income of under 1,000 euros. In contrast, the percentage for men was 21.4%. This information underscores the financial challenges faced by a considerable number of pensioners, particularly women, in Italy.

The pensions and social security agency also indicated that Italy had a total of 16.3 million pensioners last year. Among them, 450,067 individuals enjoyed a pension income exceeding 5,000 euros a month, showcasing the income gap within the pensioner community.

The report further stated that over 364 billion euros was allocated to State pensions in Italy in 2024, marking a 4.93% increase compared to the previous year. This increase in pension expenditure reflects the growing financial demands of the aging population in the country.
