AfD’s Positions Irreconcilable with Mine Says Tajani

Rome: Deputy Premier, Foreign Minister, and Forza Italia (FI) leader Antonio Tajani stated on Monday that he does not share fellow Deputy Premier Matteo Salvini’s enthusiasm for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. This comes after the Transport Minister and League chief welcomed the AfD’s strong performance in Sunday’s election in Germany.

According to Ansa News Agency, Tajani emphasized his support for the European People’s Party (EPP) and the CDU-CSU in Germany. He stated, “I have always said so,” highlighting a clear distinction between his political stance and that of the AfD. Tajani further clarified that, in his view, the AfD is not a viable partner. As FI secretary and EPP vice-president, he believes the AfD holds a completely different vision from Forza Italia and the EPP.

Tajani elaborated that the AfD does not present positive ideas regarding Italy, mentioning their stance on Italy’s presence in the eurozone and their approach to public debt. He expressed his disagreement with these positions, noting, “It is not a political party that has positive ideas about Italy; they say that Italy must leave the euro and it acts a bit like a school teacher when it comes to public debt too and I do not agree with it.” Despite respecting voters’ choices in different countries, Tajani firmly stated that the AfD’s positions are irreconcilable with his own.
