50,000 Attend Pro-Europe Rally in Rome, Say Organizers

Rome: At least 50,000 people gathered in Rome’s Piazza del Popolo for a pro-Europe demonstration organized by journalist Michele Serra, as reported by event organizers. The square was surrounded by barriers and filled to capacity with demonstrators eager to hear the scheduled speakers.

According to Ansa News Agency, the event attracted a diverse crowd, including representatives from center-left parties, lawmakers, labor union members, associations, and mayors, such as Rome’s own Roberto Gualtieri. Activists and politicians, both supportive and critical of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s ReArm plan, were also present.

Many attendees waved flags of the European Union and symbols of peace. The overflow crowd extended to the Pincio Terrace above the square, where participants watched the proceedings on a large monitor.

Opening the event, Serra emphasized the diversity of the assembly, stating, “There are many of us because we are a population.” He highlighted the importance of democracy, noting that the gathering represented various viewpoints and beliefs. “A European square is a square of people who think differently on a number of things,” Serra remarked. He underscored the significance of the assembly by concluding, “In a world that appears to be in pieces, a square that gathers different people and ideas is a scandal. This scandal has a name – it’s called democracy.”
