46 Prison Suicides Since Start of Year Highlight Alarming Trend

Rome: Some 46 prisoners in Italian jails have taken their own lives since the start of the year, the national ombudsman for the rights of detained persons said Monday. The ombudsman expressed concern over the ongoing crisis in Italian prisons.

According to Ansa News Agency, the national ombudsman highlighted that there have been a total of 294 suicides in the last four years, with an annual average of 73.5 cases. The data shows that the jail suicide rate hit a low of 59 in 2021, but reached a peak of 84 in 2022.

The troubling suicide rate has been linked to several systemic issues within the prison system, including chronic overcrowding, rampant drug use among prisoners, and insufficient staffing. These factors are thought to contribute significantly to the mental health struggles faced by inmates, exacerbating the risk of suicide.
