26 Migrants Drown as Boats Capsize Near Lampedusa

Lampedusa: At least 26 migrants drowned after two boats capsized off the coast of Lampedusa, rescuers reported. The tragedy has left 30-40 individuals missing and around 60 survivors.

According to Ansa News Agency, this incident is one of the most severe recent tragedies near the small island situated between Sicily and Tunisia. The International Organization for Migration disclosed that approximately 370 migrants have drowned in the central Mediterranean this year, with around 300 still missing.

The initial group of eight bodies brought to Lampedusa, now housed at the Cala Pisana cemetery mortuary, includes a newborn baby, two adult men, two women, and three adolescents. Five more bodies are expected to be disembarked at the Favarolo dock shortly.

Cristina Palma, deputy director of the Lampedusa hotspot, stated that 56 survivors who departed from Libya arrived by late morning, with four requiring medical observation. Marta Bernardini of Mediterranean Hope, present at the Lampedusa pier, emphasized the ongoing peril migrants face and criticized European governments for their handling of the situation.

Officials confirmed that the migrants were of Pakistani, Sudanese, and Somali origin. The limited space at the island’s mortuary necessitates prompt examinations by doctors at the outpatient clinic. Among the deceased is a one-year-old girl, adding to the somber toll of this maritime disaster.
