258,000 Job Positions to Go Unfilled in 2025 Across Italian Retail Sectors

Rome: In 2025 an estimated 258,000 job positions will remain unfilled in a range of retail sectors, retailers’ confederation Confcommercio said on Monday. The process, called mismatch, is expected to rise by 4% compared to last year, posing a significant challenge to the retail sector and potentially impacting the GDP of the entire Italian economic system.

According to Ansa News Agency, the most challenging positions to fill include roles such as sales assistants in fashion stores, food shop staff, waiters, pizza chefs, bartenders, and cleaners. The confederation attributes this shortage to several factors, including a negative demographic trend among the young working population, which has decreased by 4.8 million between 1982 and 2024 in the 15-39 age group.

Additionally, the confederation highlights a reduction in adequately prepared professionals, shifts in worker preferences, and a reluctance among many to relocate far from home as contributing factors to this employment gap. With these issues at hand, the confederation has labeled the situation as an “emergency” that threatens economic growth within the sector.
