2.6 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Messina Strait

Messina: A 2.6 magnitude earthquake hit the Messina Strait Monday. The tremor was registered between Reggio Calabria and Messina at a depth of 11 km.

According to Ansa News Agency, the government recently approved the construction of the world’s longest suspension bridge across the strait, which will connect Sicily to mainland Italy. This decision comes despite concerns about seismic risks, the potential for mafia infiltration, the destruction of bird nesting grounds, and the significant cost of 13.5 billion euros.

Transport Minister Matteo Salvini has stated that the bridge is expected to open by 2033.
