Young People Face Growing Loneliness, Says Pope Leo XIV

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV sounded the alarm about loneliness among young people on Thursday in an audience with the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools congregation. The American pontiff, who was elected the new leader of the Catholic Church a week ago, focused on the “obstacles to address” in relationships with young people and their education.

According to Ansa News Agency, Pope Leo XIV highlighted several societal issues contributing to the loneliness epidemic among youth. “Let us think of the isolation caused by rampant relational models increasingly marked by superficiality, individualism and emotional instability; of the spread of patterns of thought weakened by relativism; of the prevalence of rhythms and lifestyles in which there is not enough room for listening, reflection and dialogue, at school, in the family and, at times, among the peers themselves, with the resulting loneliness,” Pope Leo said.

The pontiff’s remarks drew attention to the lack of meaningful communication and understanding in various aspects of young people’s lives. He emphasized the need for more genuine connections and dialogue in educational settings, families, and peer groups to combat the growing sense of isolation.

Pope Leo XIV’s comments come at a time when mental health concerns among young people are increasingly in the spotlight, urging society to reevaluate how they engage with and support the younger generation.
