Workplace Poisoning Incident Leaves Indian Farm Worker with Amputated Leg

Latina: A 46-year-old Indian farm worker is currently hospitalized in Latina, located south of Rome, facing severe health risks after suspected poisoning due to prolonged exposure to chemical products. This exposure likely occurred without adequate safety measures, as reported by trade union sources on Sunday.

According to Ansa News Agency, the worker developed serious necrosis in his limbs, resulting in the amputation of one leg. There is now a significant risk that he may lose his other limbs as well. This tragic incident highlights ongoing concerns about the safety conditions for workers in the region.

In a related incident in Latina, a 31-year-old off-the-books farm laborer named Satnam Singh bled to death last June. He was found outside his hut with an arm severed by wrapping machinery, which had been placed beside him on a fruit-picking box. His employers were arrested last month on charges of gangmastering and culpable manslaughter.

The local branch of the center-left opposition Democratic Party (PD) has expressed concern over the lack of improvement in work safety conditions since Satnam Singh’s tragic death, stating that these conditions remain dire for the exploited workers.

Italy continues to grapple with a persistent wave of fatal workplace accidents. CGIL has called for the Lazio regional government to take action to improve the working conditions for migrant farm laborers and other vulnerable workers in the area.
