We will continue to fight together for Cyprus reunification, Greece’s President says

Greece and Cyprus will continue to fight together for the liberation and reunification of Cyprus and its people, President of Greece Katerina Sakellaropoulou said on Tuesday.

She was speaking after a military parade in Nicosia on the occasion of Cyprus Independence Day, on October 1st.

“October 1st is a day of honour and commemoration of the struggles and sacrifices which led to an independent Cyprus,” Sakellaropoulou said.

Sixty four years after Cyprus’ establishment and despite the illegal Turkish invasion of 1974 and continued occupation, she noted, “the Republic of Cyprus is a modern, European state, a pillar of stability in the broader region.”

Greece and Cyprus, she said, joined by fraternal ties “will continue to fight for the liberation and reunification of Cyprus and its people.”

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the
Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
