Two Makes of Neapolitan ‘Friarielli’ Pulled for Botulism Concerns

Rome: Two makes of Neapolitan fried broccoli friarielli snacks were withdrawn from the market Monday due to a suspected risk of contamination with botulism.

According to Ansa News Agency, two lots of Bel Sapore and two lots of Vittoria, each weighing a kilo, were pulled after being produced by a plant at Scafati near Salerno. The producers have issued a warning to outlets to also remove any friarielli they have already stocked as a precautionary measure.

“Friarielli” refers to broccoli rabe, also known as rapini or turnip tops. It is a leafy green vegetable that is popular in Italian cuisine, particularly in the Naples region. The withdrawal of these products underscores the importance of rigorous food safety checks to prevent potential health risks.
