Trkiye’s Defense Industry Boosts Economy with Homegrown Technologies

ANKARA: Trkiye’s defense industry has seen a significant transformation over the past two decades, shifting from heavy reliance on foreign imports to developing a robust portfolio of homegrown technologies, thereby contributing positively to the country’s economic growth.

According to Anadolu Agency, in the early 2000s, Trkiye increased its defense spending to enhance its regional and global influence. However, the strategic shift towards domestic manufacturing in the defense sector led to a decrease in military spending relative to GDP, resulting in more sustainable economic growth. In 2001, Trkiye’s defense expenditures were $7.2 billion, accounting for 3.6% of GDP, a figure that slightly increased to 3.8% the following year. By 2023, although the defense budget grew to $17 billion, the GDP ratio significantly decreased to 1.5%, thanks to the adoption of indigenous technologies.

The array of products now produced domestically includes unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs
), armored vehicles, ships, missiles, radar systems, and ammunition. This shift not only reduced import costs but also provided Trkiye with strategic autonomy in defense production. From 1970 to 1979, military and defense expenditures constituted 50% of all imports, a figure that dramatically dropped to 10% by the early 2000s. By 2023, domestically made defense products represented between 75% to 80% of the industry, up from just 20% in 2002.

This surge in domestic capability has also propelled Trkiye’s defense exports, which soared from $250 million in 2002 to an impressive $5.5 billion in 2023, according to the Turkish Exporters Assembly. The focus on homegrown defense technologies not only positions Trkiye as an independent player in the global defense market but also significantly enhances national security and reduces foreign dependency.

The expansion of the Turkish defense industry has had broader economic impacts as well, notably in job creation. The increase in the number of defense firms has led to
new employment opportunities, further boosting the country’s economic and technological progress.
