Tibor Navracsics Highlights Hungary’s Historical Role as a Nation of Freedom

Sopron: In a commemorative address on the 68th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian revolution, Tibor Navracsics, Minister of Public Administration and Regional Development, underscored the enduring significance of the year 1956 in Hungarian history. Speaking in Sopron, Navracsics asserted that 1956 continues to position Hungary as a nation of freedom within modern European history.

According to KDNP, Navracsics emphasized the educational importance of the 1956 revolution, noting that it serves as a lesson for European students about the Hungarian nation’s commitment to freedom and independence. He highlighted the willingness of Hungarians to fight and die to ensure the survival of their nation as a free entity. Navracsics also linked the events of 1956 to the political changes of 1990, which allowed for the free celebration of October 23 since 1989.

Navracsics further stated that the revolution of 1956 was a defining moment, portraying its participants as heroes rather than traitors. He credited the revolutio
n with contributing to the reunification of Germany and the broader freedom of Central Europe. The minister stressed the importance of understanding the revolution’s significance not only nationally but also locally.

In his speech, Navracsics highlighted Sopron’s pivotal role in Hungarian history, referring to it as the “most loyal city” and stressing that the actions of Sopron’s citizens during the revolution deserve particular respect. The ceremony concluded with participants placing flowers at the 1956 memorial on Széchenyi Square.
