Three Healthcare Operators Arrested for Alleged Patient Abuse in Viterbo
Viterbo: Three healthcare operators were arrested for allegedly mistreating and abusing elderly patients of the care home where they worked in the province of Viterbo, investigative sources said Tuesday. Three other employees were suspended as part of the investigation carried out by Carabinieri police since the spring of 2024.
According to Ansa News Agency, the probe was opened after colleagues of the six suspects reported them to the Carabinieri police, stating they abused patients. Surveillance cameras installed by investigators provided evidence of the abuse. Patients were often tied to their beds and were malnourished.
The six employees of the care home, which is located in the Lazio town of Latera near Viterbo, are accused of psychologically and physically abusing senior residents. An elderly woman was also allegedly sexually abused by an operator, according to investigators. The elderly residents were often left without food, tied to their beds for hours, and given tranquillizers.
