THAAD Missile Defense System Deployed in Israel Amid Rising Tensions with Iran

TEL AVIV: Following the Pentagon’s decision to deploy a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system to Israel, the focus has intensified on the capabilities and strategic implications of this advanced missile defense technology. The deployment includes a THAAD battery and military personnel, aimed at bolstering Israel’s defense against potential threats from Iran, the Houthi rebels in Yemen, and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

According to Anadolu Agency, the THAAD system is designed to intercept ballistic missiles both inside and outside the Earth’s atmosphere. Its deployment in Israel is seen as a critical measure to enhance the country’s existing air defense infrastructure, which includes the Arrow, David’s Sling, and Iron Dome systems. These systems have faced challenges intercepting certain missile types in recent Iranian attacks.

The THAAD system, produced by Lockheed Martin, is renowned for its ability to target missiles at high altitudes and long ranges. It uses kinetic hit-to-kill technology, which de
stroys incoming threats through direct collisions, avoiding the need for explosive warheads. This capability is particularly effective during the terminal phase of a missile’s flight, which is the most critical period for intercepting and neutralizing the threat.

The system comprises five main components: interceptors, launchers, radar, a fire control unit, and support equipment. Each unit is highly mobile and manned by up to 100 personnel. The system’s radar, the AN/TPY-2, operates in the X-band frequency, providing long-range detection and tracking capabilities essential for early threat identification.

Globally, the THAAD system has been deployed in several key strategic locations by the United States and is also used by the United Arab Emirates. Saudi Arabia has entered into agreements to procure the system in the future, reflecting its growing importance in regional defense strategies.

The recent deployment in Israel follows specific incidents where tensions with Iran escalated significantly. Notably,
Iran’s retaliatory attacks on April 13 and October 1, following Israeli strikes, underscored the urgent need for advanced defensive capabilities. The THAAD system’s deployment is therefore seen as a crucial step in maintaining regional stability and safeguarding against further escalations in missile confrontations.
