Tamberi Confirms Participation in 2028 Los Angeles Olympics at Sanremo Festival

Sanremo: High jump champion Gianmarco ‘Gimbo’ Tamberi announced his intention to compete at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles during the opening night of the 75th edition of the Sanremo Song Festival. The declaration was made at the Ariston Theatre, where Tamberi delivered a monologue alongside singer and songwriter Jovanotti.

According to Ansa News Agency, Tamberi’s announcement comes after a challenging period. He was unable to defend his Olympic title at the Paris Games last summer due to hospitalization for renal colic and vomiting blood. The incident had led to rumors about his potential retirement from the sport.

The Sanremo Song Festival, known for its vibrant mix of music and culture, featured a special message from Pope Francis on its opening night. In a video message, the Pope emphasized the unifying power of music, describing it as a “language that all populations speak to reach everybody’s hearts.”

The first evening of the festival saw performances by artists Brunori SAS, Giorgia, Lucio Corsi, Simone Cristicchi, and Achille Lauro, who topped the standings of the popular TV jamboree and song contest. The festival will continue until Saturday, showcasing a range of musical talents.
