Tajani Criticizes UNIFIL’s Rules of Engagement Regarding Hezbollah Disarmament

Berlin, Germany – Italian Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani criticized the effectiveness of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon’s (UNIFIL) rules of engagement for failing to disarm Hezbollah, during a press interaction in Berlin on Monday.

According to Ansa News Agency, Tajani expressed concerns over the current operational guidelines of UNIFIL, indicating they are insufficient for the disarmament of Hezbollah, a recognized militant group. He emphasized that if the objective is indeed disarmament, then a significant reassessment of the rules is imperative. Tajani highlighted the lack of suitable weaponry and authority under the existing framework, which he believes are inadequate to enforce such decisions effectively.

During his conversation with the media, when asked about potential modifications to the rules of engagement for the UNIFIL contingent in Lebanon, Tajani was clear in his stance. “It is obvious that, if the objective is that of the United Nations, the current rules of engagement are not good because they do not even have the suitable weaponry to impose decisions of this type,” he stated, putting the onus on the United Nations to make necessary adjustments.
