Sparks Fly in Italian Parliament Over Gaza and Violent Protests
Rome: Sparks flew in the Lower House on Tuesday with the governing coalition clashing with the opposition over Gaza and Monday’s protests against the plight of the Palestinian people in many Italian cities, some of which turned violent, with dozens of police officers injured in Milan.
According to Ansa News Agency, Galeazzo di Bignami, the whip for Premier Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, asked Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi to report on what happened and expressed solidarity with the forces of law and order. Bignami stated, “There are some who, by exploiting a tragedy, have tried to stage an attack on the institutions.” He emphasized the coalition’s support for law enforcement, saying, “If we have to choose between those who block trains and those who wear uniforms, we are on the side of the guys who wear uniforms.”
Riccardo Ricciardi of the 5-Star Movement (M5S) responded sharply, asserting that the protesters who took to the streets on Monday had “redeemed the name of Italy,” while criticizing the government’s stance on Israel. He accused the ruling alliance of using isolated incidents to suppress a significant movement and claimed the government was “accomplices” of “genocide in Gaza.”
Marco Grimaldi of the Green-Left Alliance (AVS) argued that the government was “in trouble” and in “the minority” regarding this issue. Meanwhile, Chiara Braga of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) criticized Meloni for not updating parliament on the latest developments in Gaza, stating, “You do not recognize that what happened yesterday was an act of collective conscience.”
