Soccer: Cannavaro Named Uzbekistan Coach

Tashkent: Italy’s 2006 World Cup winning captain and former China coach Fabio Cannavaro was named Uzbekistan coach on Monday to lead the Asian team in its first World Cup finals. Naples-born Cannavaro, 52, a former Napoli, Parma, Inter, Juventus and Real Madrid centre back regarded as one of the best defenders in football history, has previously coached Guangzhou Evergrande (2014-2015), Al Nassr (2015-2016), Tianjin Quanjian (2016-2017), Guangzhou Evergrande (2017-2019), China (2019), Benevento (2022-2023), Udinese (2024), and Dinamo Zagreb (2024-2025).

According to Ansa News Agency, the Uzbek Football Federation announced that they have signed a contract with Fabio Cannavaro, recognizing him as a 2006 World Cup winner and one of the best defenders of the modern era. The Federation expressed confidence in Cannavaro’s leadership as he prepares their national team for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
