Sinner Advances to Third Round After Overcoming Schoolkate

Melbourne: Italy’s world number one and defending champion Jannik Sinner came from a set down to beat local boy Tristan Schoolkate 4-6 6-4 6-1 6-3 and reach the third round of the Australian Open on Thursday. Australian wildcard entry Schoolkate, ranked 136th, broke the 23-year-old Italian late in the first set to take the upper hand and put up a spirited fight until he was broken deep in the second set. After that, Sinner cruised to victory.

According to Ansa News Agency, earlier on Thursday, Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego defeated Brazilian Joao Fonseca, who is widely considered a rising star in international tennis, with a score of 6-7 6-3 6-1 3-6 6-3 to progress in the tournament. Lorenzo Musetti also advanced to the third round after beating Canadian Denis Shapovalov 7-6, 7-6, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Matteo Berrettini’s tournament run came to an end as he lost 7-6 2-6 6-3 7-3 to Holger Rune. The Italian players’ mixed results highlight the competitive nature of this year’s Australian Open, with some advancing while others face early exits.
