Seismic Activity Persists at Campi Flegrei Volcanic Caldera

Rome: The recent seismic activity at the Campi Flegrei volcanic caldera, located near Naples, persisted overnight with a magnitude 3.9 earthquake, followed by two additional quakes of magnitude 3.

According to Ansa News Agency, a magnitude 3.9 earthquake was also recorded on Sunday, which was felt by residents in various parts of Naples and the surrounding province. In the last three days, the area has experienced over a dozen seismic events.

As a precautionary measure, schools in the town of Pozzuoli, which is near the epicenter of the earthquakes, remain closed on Monday. The Campi Flegrei region, also referred to as the Phlegrean Fields in English, is currently undergoing bradyseism, or ground uplift, leading to numerous earthquakes over the past year.

In response to the situation, Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci has appointed a special commissioner for the Campi Flegrei area to oversee risk-prevention measures. The minister has expressed concerns regarding the urban development that has been
permitted in the area.
