Security in Ukraine and Europe Hinges on US Involvement, Says Tajani

Brussels: Security in Ukraine and Europe cannot be guaranteed without a strong transatlantic relationship and NATO, and it is impossible to achieve without the United States, stated Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. His remarks came during an address at a European People’s Party (EPP) meeting, ahead of a summit focusing on Ukraine and European security.

According to Ansa News Agency, Tajani emphasized the importance of the US in ensuring regional security, saying, “It is absolutely impossible to think of guaranteeing the security of Ukraine and Europe without a solid transatlantic relationship and without NATO.” He underscored the necessity of US involvement from the onset, adding, “It can’t be done without the US.” Tajani also highlighted the need for Europe to contribute more towards its own security, stating that security involves more than just military aspects but also the safety of citizens against threats like terrorism.

During the meeting, Tajani, who also leads the centre-right Forza Italia (FI) party in the EPP, addressed queries about his trust in US President Donald Trump, affirming that he “trusts everyone,” and noting the importance of maintaining a strong alliance with the United States irrespective of its leadership. “We are allies of the United States of America, regardless of who is president,” he remarked.

When asked about his stance on Russian President Vladimir Putin, Tajani indicated that trust depended on whether agreements were honored. He noted the need for a pragmatic approach, acknowledging Putin’s past disregard for international law, and stressed the importance of observing future actions.

Tajani also clarified Italy’s position on military involvement, stating that while Italy would not deploy troops as part of European or NATO missions, it would consider participating in a UN peacekeeping mission in Ukraine if necessary.
