S&D May Withdraw Support from Von der Leyen Over Green Deal Reversal

Brussels: The Socialists and Democrats (S and D) group may pull its support for European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen following her reversal on the European Green Deal, Italian centre-left Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schelin announced.

According to Ansa News Agency, Schelin emphasized the importance of the S and D group’s votes amid speculation that the majority coalition with the European People’s Party (EPP) and the Liberals might face instability due to von der Leyen’s shift in stance. “Our votes are not guaranteed and I assure you that our votes count,” she stated.

Schelin highlighted the current critical view of the Commission held by the S and D group. She mentioned that Iratxe Garcia Perez, the leader of the EU Socialists, had a meeting with von der Leyen to discuss the next steps. “Later we will talk about which strategy to adopt,” Schelin added.
