Scores of Social Media Accounts Investigated for Insults Against Holocaust Survivor

Milan: A Milan judge on Monday directed prosecutors to initiate investigations targeting 86 social media accounts linked to antisemitic insults directed at Italian Holocaust survivor and Life senator Liliana Segre.

According to Ansa News Agency, the decision follows a recent surge of online insults aimed at the 94-year-old Auschwitz survivor. The insults emerged after Segre participated in a Liberation Day event in Pesaro on Friday, with some individuals offensively labeling her as “the biggest Nazi” of all.

In addition to the scrutiny of these social media accounts, the judge instructed prosecutors to investigate nine individuals who had not been previously examined. There is also an obligation to press charges against seven other individuals. Meanwhile, prosecutors had initially requested the dismissal of 17 cases.

The investigation saw the dismissal of charges against Italian celebrity chef Gabriele Rubini, professionally known as Chef Rubio. Rubio had criticized Segre for what he described as “a deafening silence over the plight of Palestine.”
