Satellites and Supertelescopes Set to Propel Italian Astrophysics into the Future
Naples: Satellites and supertelescopes are at the forefront of Italian astrophysics’ ambitious plans, as announced during the 25th anniversary celebration of the Italian Astrophysics Institute (INAF) held in Naples.
According to Ansa News Agency, the event, hosted at the Capodimonte observatory, highlighted Italy’s commitment to advancing space exploration and scientific research. The National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) revealed plans involving all-Italian satellites to study the universe, participation in the construction of new supertelescopes, and collaboration in future large space telescopes aimed at exploring new worlds. Additionally, INAF is set to partake in lunar and Martian explorations, marking a significant stride in their scientific endeavors.
Speaking at the event, INAF President Roberto Ragazzoni emphasized the institute’s dedication to cosmic exploration across various wavelengths and celestial messengers. “INAF is the Italian research body for the study of the Universe… from our Solar System, through time and space, up to the origins of the universe,” Ragazzoni stated. He underscored the significance of the gathering in Naples, which aimed not only to celebrate past achievements but also to discuss future scenarios over the next 25 years.
The scientific director of INAF, Isabella Pagano, further elaborated on the institute’s contributions to international research. She highlighted the use of prestigious observation infrastructures both on the ground and in space, alongside advanced computing methodologies. Pagano noted that the cutting-edge technologies developed by INAF often have practical applications beyond astrophysics, benefiting various sectors of civil society.
INAF’s officials reiterated their commitment to maintaining a leading role in major international projects. They stressed that the institute’s flagship projects include the study of extrasolar planets, gravitational waves, and the development of powerful new telescopes. Additionally, they pointed out the critical role of supercomputers and quantum technologies in enhancing the study of stars and planets, showcasing Italy’s dedication to remaining at the forefront of astrophysical research.
