Rosita Missoni, Co-Founder of Iconic Italian Knitwear Brand, Dies at 93

MILAN: Rosita Missoni, a pioneering figure in the world of high fashion and co-founder of the renowned Italian knitwear brand Missoni, passed away on Thursday at the age of 93. Known for transforming brightly colored woolen zigzag patterns into a hallmark of high fashion, Missoni’s legacy is intertwined with the global success of the brand she founded alongside her late husband, Ottavio.

According to Ansa News Agency, Rosita Missoni was born in Golasecca, Varese, into a family of textile artisans. Her life and career remained closely tied to the Varese area, particularly Sumirago, where the Missoni brand took its roots. The couple married in 1953 and launched their namesake brand, which rapidly gained acclaim in Italy before captivating fashion capitals such as Milan, Paris, London, and New York. The vibrant colors and distinctive patterns of Missoni became a signature element, easily recognizable in high-end fashion ateliers worldwide.

The Missoni family endured personal tragedies, including the loss of their son, Vittorio, who served as CEO of the fashion house until his untimely death in a plane crash. Ottavio ‘Tai’ Missoni, who hailed from Croatia, passed away shortly after in 2013 at the age of 92. Despite these losses, Rosita Missoni continued to be a guiding force in the brand, leaving behind a lasting impact on the fashion industry through her innovative design and dedication to the Missoni legacy.
