Rome’s Revamped Piazza dei Cinquecento Unveiled as Gateway for Jubilee Holy Year

Rome: Piazza dei Cinquecento, the expansive square in front of Termini rail station, officially reopened on Tuesday following extensive refurbishment and restyling efforts to serve as a fitting gateway to Rome for the Roman Catholic Jubilee Holy Year.

According to Ansa News Agency, Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri described the newly unveiled ‘gateway’ as “clear and wide” at the base of the station’s reinforced concrete wave shelter. This transformation includes a sequence of parallel bands paved with travertine, dark basalt, and draining materials, complemented by the oval and white shelters of the new bus terminuses.

In anticipation of the Jubilee, the square now offers a renewed presence to the city. Mayor and commissioner for the Holy Year Gualtieri highlighted that the space, once marred by degradation, now boasts an architectural quality that befits the Capital’s historical significance.

Currently, the completed first phase accounts for 85% of the overall project, encompassing access areas to the station, the new bus terminal, and taxi spaces. These elements are crucial for accommodating the influx of millions of pilgrims expected to arrive via rail during the Holy Year.

While construction continues on a portion of the square’s left side, buses are set to begin using their new stalls, facilitating swift progress towards the project’s completion, which is scheduled for this summer. Gualtieri noted that there are no delays and emphasized that the current phase exceeds expectations. He explained that the project, initially divided into two phases by prime ministerial decree, was originally planned for completion in 2026.
