Rome to Repatriate Italians Amid Guantanamo Discussions

Rome: Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced that Italy is prepared to repatriate any Italians illegally residing in the United States, indicating that there is no necessity for Washington to transfer them to Guantanamo Bay.

According to Ansa News Agency, Tajani’s remarks came in response to reports indicating that Italian citizens are among approximately 9,000 illegal migrants whom President Donald Trump’s administration plans to send to the US naval base in Cuba.

Tajani clarified during an interview with RTL radio that initial information from the Department of Homeland Security suggests Guantanamo would serve as a holding facility for illegal immigrants from countries unwilling to accept repatriations.

However, Tajani emphasized that Italy had previously communicated to the US administration its readiness to accept the return of irregular immigrants, ensuring the protection of their individual rights.
