Rise in Workplace Fatalities as 797 Deaths Reported in 2024

Rome: An alarming rise in workplace fatalities has been recorded for the year 2024, with a total of 797 individuals losing their lives on the job, according to the national labour accidents and occupational illness agency, INAIL. This marks a slight increase of 0.9% compared to 790 workplace deaths reported in 2023. Additionally, the agency’s data reveals that 280 workers died while commuting, reflecting a significant rise of 17.2% compared to the 239 commuter fatalities noted in the previous year.

According to Ansa News Agency, the month of January alone saw 45 workers die while on the job, a sharp increase of 36.4% from the 33 deaths recorded in the same month last year. Commuter deaths in January also saw a rise, with 14 fatalities reported, up 16.7% from the 12 recorded at the start of the previous year. INAIL’s latest figures underscore the urgent need for heightened safety measures in both workplaces and commuting environments to prevent further loss of life.
