ROME: President Sergio Mattarella emphasized the importance of workplace health and safety being a “permanent priority” during his message to the ANMIL association, which represents individuals suffering from labour-related disabilities, on the national day dedicated to victims of work-related accidents.
According to Ansa News Agency, President Mattarella’s address highlighted the national day of reflection, remembrance, and commitment towards improving workplace safety. “Today Italy turns its thoughts to the people who have lost their lives or suffered injuries and illnesses because of their work,” Mattarella stated. He described the observance as a moment for the country to reaffirm its dedication to the safety of its workers, and the necessity of a collective effort to prevent further tragedies and uphold the dignity of all employees.
The need for heightened attention to workplace safety was underscored by recent statistics from Inail, the national agency responsible for labor accidents and occupational
illnesses. Inail reported a concerning increase in fatal work-related incidents, with 680 deaths recorded in the first eight months of 2024, marking a 3.5% increase from the same period in 2023. Additionally, there were 386,554 reports of accidents during the January to August period of 2024, which represents a slight increase of 0.9% compared to 2023, but a significant decrease of 20.2% from the figures reported in the first eight months of 2022.
