Premier Meloni Attributes Bank Profits to Policies by 5-Star Movement
Rome: Italy’s banks have garnered significant profits due to policies enacted by the leftist populist 5-Star Movement (M5S) during its tenure in power, Premier Giorgia Meloni stated. This assertion was made in response to criticism from an M5S MP regarding the 2026 budget bill, which allegedly allows highly profitable banks to evade sufficient fiscal responsibility.
According to Ansa News Agency, Premier Meloni addressed the issue raised by M5S House Whip Riccardo Ricciardi, who highlighted the substantial dividends received by banks and criticized the allocation of resources in the budget law. Meloni acknowledged the possibility of banks receiving considerable dividends but attributed this financial success to specific policies implemented by the M5S.
Meloni pointed out that the banks’ profits were primarily due to two measures: the ‘superbonus’ tax credits for home improvements and the provision of state guarantees enabling banks to renegotiate existing loans granted to families and businesses. She emphasized that these decisions, made under the M5S administration, significantly contributed to the banks’ financial gains.
